Getting Started
FieldOps doesn't use accounts, passwords, or email. You sign in with a PIN. That's it. The PIN your admin gives you decides what you can do — drop pins, view the map, manage settings, all based on which PIN you use.
First Login
Your admin will give you a URL — something like yourdept.fieldops.app — and a PIN. Open the URL in your phone's browser. You'll see your department's name and icon, and a single PIN input.
Just the PIN your admin gave you.
What Your PIN Means
FieldOps uses a few different kinds of PINs. Which one you got tells the app both what you can do and how you show up:
Generic Role PINs
Your department has three department-wide PINs — Admin, User, and Viewer. If your admin gave you one of these, signing in with it gives you that role, but actions you take are labeled generically (no personal name tracked).
- Admin PIN — full control: settings, roster, create/delete operations
- User PIN — drop pins, use the map, run search and Follow Me
- Viewer PIN — read-only access to the map and pins
Named PINs (Roster Members)
If you're on the department's Team Roster, you get your own named PIN. It's still a PIN you type in, but it's tied to your name. When you drop pins, edit things, or show up in reports, your actual name shows up — not just "User" or "Admin." Use your named PIN if you have one. It's better for accountability.
Temporary PINs
Admins can issue time-limited PINs for mutual aid, visiting crews, or short-term contractors. These expire automatically — you'll get one along with instructions on how long it lasts.
Double-check the URL — it needs to be your department's subdomain, not the bare fieldops.app. If you're at the right URL and the PIN still doesn't work, it may have been regenerated. Ask your admin for a fresh one.
Install It to Your Home Screen
FieldOps runs in a browser, but it's built to install like a real app. Once installed, it opens full-screen, works offline, and shows up next to your other apps.
On iPhone / iPad
Open fieldops.app in Safari (not Chrome — Apple only lets Safari install PWAs). Tap the Share button ⎙ at the bottom, scroll down, tap Add to Home Screen, tap Add.
On Android
Open fieldops.app in Chrome. Look for the install prompt that pops up, or tap the three-dot menu and choose Install app. You can also long-press the tab and pick Add to Home screen.
Installed, the app opens full-screen (no browser chrome), holds GPS better, works offline once you've loaded a map, and gets its own icon. In the field that's the difference between "I can use it" and "I can't be bothered."
What Happens Next
After you sign in, you land on the Projects screen — the list of operations in your department. Depending on your role:
- Admins see every operation and can create new ones with + New Operation
- Users see every operation and can create new ones
- Viewers see every operation but can't create or change anything
Tap any operation to open its map. If the list is empty, your admin hasn't created any operations yet — that's normal for a fresh department.
